• Travel fees (players who have not paid the appropriate fees in full will not be allowed to participate in

games, unless otherwise agreed upon by the league commissioners):

• All 4th-6th grade girls interested in playing travel basketball must attend a uniform fitting at the

S.P.O.R.T.S. office on Thursday, August 1 from 6-9 p.m. Uniform fitting/ordering will take place

before tryouts so orders can be filled before the first games.

- If you are unable to attend the uniform fitting on August 1, please contact Jamie Schellhammer

([email protected] or 317-900-3278) ASAP to schedule an alternative fitting.

- 7th-8th girls will have uniforms provided and will not need to purchase new uniforms.

PRACTICE

• Girls making a team will be contacted by their coach via email and provided with a practice schedule

as soon as the coaches are determined.

• First Practices for 4th-8th grade will take place the week after tryouts. For 3rd graders, first practice

will take place the last week in September.

• Teams will generally practice twice during the week and on Saturday’s when they do not have a game

scheduled on the weekend.

• We understand that many of the girls interested in travel basketball may also be participating in other

fall sports (e.g., soccer, volleyball, etc.). As long as there is a commitment to attend practices/games

when there aren’t conflicts with other fall sports, we fully support girls playing other fall sports as

well.

• If there are enough girls for multiple teams, all teams at that grade level will practice at the same time

and location.

GAMES

• Games will be played in the two following leagues:

  • Indiana Girls Hoops League (IGHL).
  • In the IGHL teams will play two games every other Sunday.
  • IGHL games will be played at various high schools throughout the Indianapolis metropolitan

area.

  • IGHL Fall League begins September 15.
  • Indy Youth Basketball League (IYBL).
  • IYBL will generally play one game every Saturday. There will be an occasional mid-week game.
  • IYBL games are generally played at either Finch Creek Fieldhouse (16289 Boden Rd, Noblesville), Pacers Athletic Center (Grand Park - Westfield), Indiana Basketball Academy (96th and Keystone) or other gyms in Hamilton County.
  • The IYBL fall season will not start until Saturday, October 26.
  • 3rd Grade teams will play in the IYBL Fall and IGHL winter leagues. They may also play in the IYBL winter league
  • 4th-6th Grade teams will play in the IGHL fall and winter leagues, as well as the IYBL fall league. They may also play in the IYBL winter league.
  • 6th Grade teams may have their practice/game schedules adjusted as the season goes on to accommodate school-ball schedules.
  • 7th-8th Grade teams will play in the IGHL fall leagues.

While our travel program is a competitive one, it is our expectation that significant playing time be provided for all players. Further details on this expectation will be provided to coaches and parents along with the Code of Conduct at the beginning of the season.

FAQ

What is the travel basketball program?

The girls travel basketball program was developed to provide 3rd-8th grade girls in the HSE/Fishers community with a higher level of competition and development. The teams are entered into two leagues that consist of dozens of teams from central Indiana.

Which travel program will my daughter play on - FHS or HSE?

The school boundaries for the current school year will determine in which travel program your daughter will participate. If your permanent residence is within the Fishers High school (FHS) boundary, then your daughter will participate in the FHS travel program. If you reside in the Hamilton Southeastern High School (HSE) boundary, then your daughter will participate in the HSE travel program.

What type of time commitment can we expect for travel basketball?

Teams usually practice 2-3 times per week before games start and then 1-2 times per week depending on the game schedule. Once games start, teams will normally have one Saturday game and also doubleheaders on every other Sunday. The 7th and 8th grade travel season begins with evaluations shortly after school begins in August, and runs into late November. The 3rd-6th grade seasons starts with camp and evaluations in late August/early September. League play runs from September thru January with a league tournament in February.

I hear "travel" and think of long drives, hotel stays, and weekend-long tournaments. Is that the case?

Not at all - the "travel" name in this case is a bit of a misnomer, but is used to distinguish the program from our recreational program, Intermediate/Junior High programs, and spring/summer AAU clubs. Our Sunday league (Indy Girls Hoops League) will use Indianapolis area schools (including many Hamilton County schools - FHS, HSE, Noblesville, Carmel and Westfield) and our weeknight/Saturday league is based in Hamilton County.

How much does it cost to participate?

The travel fees are approximately $225 for 3rd-6th grade. It is approximately $170 for 7th/8th grades. This includes league fees, school usage fees (for practices), insurance, etc. A uniform (shorts and reversible jersey) costs approximately $35, and the same uniform is used each year. Shooting shirts are long-sleeved and are optional -they are approximately $30. There is also an admission charge for fans.

How are coaches selected?

Interested parent coaches and independent coaches must submit their names to the travel coordinator. Coaches are selected by the travel coordinator and varsity coach based on experience, feedback from prior seasons, and an interview if necessary. All coaches and assistants must pass a background check.

Do the travel teams take the place of the Intermediate and Junior High school teams?

No, the intermediate school teams and the travel teams are mutually exclusive of one another. Your daughter may play for either of the two teams or both of them. The Junior High travel season ends before or shortly after school tryouts. The 6th grade travel season overlaps the school season, so 6th grade travel teams do not have weeknight practice once the school teams begin practicing.

My daughter is not the best player, but she works hard and loves playing. Should she play on the travel team or in the recreational league?

We always encourage girls to go out for the travel basketball team if they like competition and enjoy challenging practices. However, we do like to point out that travel basketball is significantly different from the recreational league. In addition to individual development, coaches are attempting to place the most competitive teams on the floor. Playing time is at the coach's discretion based on the commitment of time, energy of the players, and the game situation. Equal playing time is not the top priority as is the case in the recreational league. With that said, it is a developmental program and each girl will receive adequate playing time over the course of a season.

Should I sign my daughter up for the rec league if she is planning to play on a travel team?

Yes. If your daughter makes a travel team, the money you paid towards the recreational league will be applied in full towards her travel fees. If she does not get selected for the travel team, then she will be placed on a recreational team by the recreational league commissioner.
